Cricket Leadership Day

Posted on 11th May 2022

Organised through the England Cricket Board, a select number of Year 9 girls took part in a Cricket Leadership Day here at the Academy. The students were coached by Norfolk Cricket Board’s Development Director, Lewis Denmark, and Women and Girls Development Officer, Peter Free.

The day started with a presentation from Lewis explaining the importance of promoting women’s cricket, then the group really dug deep into the importance of effective umpiring and how to score. After a brief break the students were then immersed in a full 4 hours of umpiring, scoring, playing cricket and even running their own mini cricket drills! This was a fantastic opportunity for the sports students to have a little taster into the world of coaching and sports leadership.

All the girls were fantastic throughout the day and represented the Academy brilliantly. Mackenzie Outlaw really shone during her mini coaching session where her communication skills excelled and her enthusiasm was exemplary, as did Phoebe Gray, who gained personal feedback from Pete who suggested that she “demonstrated real, raw potential as a coach”.

This hands-on opportunity really ignited the passion of cricket amongst the girls, with some asking which local clubs they could join. The day was a complete success with the students doing themselves, the PE department and the Academy proud.
