Sound of Silence

Posted on 13th May 2022

On Friday 13 May, Year 11 GCSE Citizenship students took part in a 24-hour sponsored silence in aid of UNICEF's work. As part of their GCSE they have created a few projects to hand over to the following year group, including projects on peer mentoring, anti-sexual harassment and preventing racial discrimination, but they wanted to create and deliver something before they left, culminating in this sponsored silence.

The group of 27 students, including some of the most vocal in the year group, and their teacher Miss Murray were silent from 8am on Friday to 8am on Saturday. They organised white boards, buckets for donations and a JustGiving page, created an assembly and were raising awareness for several days to ensure they raised as much money as possible. This was an incredible achievement for these students, particularly so close to their GCSEs, but they rose to the challenge and, as it stands, have raised a total of £1400.

Many teachers have commented on how lovely it was to see the community of students taking initiative. Although the students said it was challenging and tiring, they felt it was a great experience and are incredibly proud of what they have achieved.
