Intent
The MFL Department at AA is a committed and passionate department whose intent is based upon the belief that learning a language opens a world of new possibilities and opportunities to our students. Through languages we foster students’ curiosity and deepen their understanding, not only of their own identity and culture, but also of other countries. We encourage students to become curious and interested in the world and to respect other cultures and people, as well as building their communication and literacy skills. There are many clear personal, cultural, social and career benefits in being able to communicate in another language. Our curriculum is designed to develop transferable language skills in listening, reading, writing and speaking as well as grammatical knowledge of French and German. Lessons are interactive, creative and challenging and it is our intent to develop resilient and confident students who are inquisitive linguists with high aspirations.
KS3
On entry into year 7, most students are given the opportunity to experience both French and German, spending 2 hours per fortnight on each. It is felt that some students benefit from studying just one language at this stage and one group will do so. However, in years 8 & 9, all students are able to focus on one language experienced in year 7 and continue their studies of either French or German for 4 hours per fortnight.

KS4 (GCSE)
Studying a language at GCSE is ideal for those students who enjoy communicating with other people, finding out about how language works and learning about different countries and cultures. Students have already covered a lot of vocabulary and grammar in KS3 and the French GCSE course builds on this knowledge with a range of new topics. The course is designed to equip students with the knowledge to communicate in a variety of contexts, to develop their cultural awareness and extend their language skills.

A GCSE in French means that you will be able to study AS and A2 French, but it will also add an extra dimension to your personal skills profile on your CV. HomeworkAt GCSE students are expected to complete 1 hour of homework per week. This may include completing reading, listening and writing tasks, translating into and from the target language & preparing for assessments in the four key skills. It is also essential that vocabulary and grammar rules are learned on a regular basis. |
