Steps For Success

Course description

Steps for Success is all about equipping young people with the skills they need to be successful, in school and for the rest of their lives after they have left. The success might be in terms of work but it might also be about relationships and happiness. There are two main parts, with lessons split roughly half and half for all year groups.Course structure

Being Successful

About half the lessons are designed to make sure that everyone understands that how successful they are is down to them and how they react to events and opportunities and not about how clever they are. This includes teaching about skills such as resilience, self-reliance, tenacity and goal setting which are proven to help people achieve what they want. This is based on scientific research into why some people are more successful than others, even when you take into account their background and education.

Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG)

The other half of the lessons are about practical skills and knowledge about careers. This includes help choosing paths for careers and future education and making sure that students maximise their chances of success through lessons on how to write CVs and application forms and interview technique. This part of the course contains the bulk of the school’s Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG) delivery.

Steps for Success is taught to all years from Year 7 to Year 11 in one lesson every fortnight.

Pixl Edge award:

In a further step to support our students in becoming successful individuals when they leave education all students in years 7-10 are enrolled on the Pixl Edge award scheme.  This is a nationally recognised award that credits students for completing activities that develop their leadership, resilience and communications skills.  Students use some of their Steps for Success lesson time to plan and evaluate the activities they will complete to achieve their award.
