International Expeditions
Attleborough Academy is excited to be taking part in our first international expedition to Borneo during the Summer with other participating schools within the Trust.
We very much hope that this will become a regular event taking place every two years with the next expedition to Kenya already in the planning stages. Who knows what 2029 will bring?
Borneo 2025
5 July 2025 – 2 August 2025
In the summer, a team of 12 pupils and one staff member from Attleborough Academy joined other schools in the trust and flew to Borneo for a four-week adventure.

After a couple of days in a Hotel in the city of Kota Kinabalu to acclimatise to the heat and humidity we set off to Camp Tinangol for our next 4 days. Our accommodation was within longhouses built in the Rungus style and set within a native community village.

During our time there, we worked on a number of projects which helped the local community by improving village facilities. One of the projects we worked on was helping to build a community centre and outdoor play area.
We then headed further into the Jungle stopping overnight at the Sabah tea plantation before arriving at Camp Batu Puteh. It was here that we headed by boat along the Kinabatangan River and made camp within the jungle, sleeping in hammocks. We worked on jungle restoration projects during the day and took boat trips at dusk and dawn to admire, close up, the fascinating and endangered animals, including orangutans, proboscis monkeys and crocodiles.

At this point, 10 days into our adventure, we visited the Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary and Sun Bear Conservation Centre. It was a chance to see them close up in their natural habitat. Set on the edge of the jungle, the orangutans were free to come and go as they pleased.

By now, we had travelled from one side of Borneo to the other, and it was time to head back deep into the heart of Borneo to get ready for our jungle trek. We travelled to a camp in the foothills of Mount Kinabalu to prepare and, a day later, departed on foot for a five-day trek through the jungle. Our trek took us deep into the jungle, sleeping in hammocks and trekking from camp to camp during the day. It was designed to challenge us as we travelled through the environment, putting up our own hammocks and getting involved in a range of basic campcraft skills.

Following our trek, we stayed at the Damai Eco Range in Ranau, a beautiful place to rest and recharge for a few days. We got our washing done from being in the Jungle and even had time for a dip in their swimming pool.

From here, we went to Tandarason Resort and Country Club in the Tambunan district of Sabah. Spending 5 days working on community-based tourism projects with a local village.

After this project work we headed to the coast for a couple of days by the beach. Time to relax and take in the wonderful sunsets.

We returned to Kota Kinabalu for the last few days, taking in a visit to the local wetlands deep in the mangroves. All that was left to do was some shopping and get ready for the return flight.

A fantastic trip was had by all.
