Maths Symposium

Posted on 13th Nov 2025

The Year 13's were excited to go on this trip again and hear from three very different speakers. The first talked about the use of AI by businesses to model possible decisions that a business could make, with the AI taking out any ethics from the decision. His company was then the 'anti AI' and used maths to work out different strategies, predict how the AI would work and try to come up with the best solution for the company. This speaker had used discrete maths to model situations, along with some flashing images and songs to grab our attention. The second speaker shared his experiences of using maths to model river and water flow, to see how waste and pollutants were then carried along and the important work that he had then been part of to work out the most effective way to clear up the pollution. He also gave us a few insights into his experience on countdown! Finally, was the history of numbers, asking deep questions as to where numbers had come from, trying to answer the 'who created maths' and how did it come about. This was fascinating in how he broke down the origin of certain types of numbers and questioned the students beliefs on what they knew, what they had accepted and what have been invented!
