Attleborough Academy Garden at the Royal Norfolk Show

Posted on 27th Jun 2023

On 27 June, 10 members of the Allotment Club loaded the school garden's finest plants, flowers and vegetables to take to the Royal Norfolk Show. The Norfolk school's coronation themed competition required own grown flowers and produce, so we had been cultivating our best all year.  Unfortunately, most of the flower bulbs, which had been lovingly grown in classrooms, didn't flower at the right time, so we had also needed to borrow some wildflowers from the garden.

Our final display included a range of beautiful flowers in the red, white and blue theme, bouquets of the stunning roses in upcycled wellies (thank you Peter Beales for the rose bushes planted many years ago,) and planters of tasty looking vegetables from the many raised beds behind the David Bartram Building.

We surrounded our wheelbarrow display with posters showing all the elements of the garden, including the pond with thriving wildlife. The students also designed and built a coronation themed mini biopod (with a union flag and recycled canes) to show that growing plants could be sustainable and support nature in any size garden.

On 28 June, the students explained their display and ideas to the Royal Norfolk Show Garden judges.  The students were awarded a silver gilt certificate and a guidebook on tree species. We then explored the rest of the show: saw displays, sampled food and admired animals. Unfortunately, we missed Prince William.

Finally, we popped in to the thank The Papillion Project who have helped us revive and develop the garden over the last two years.

Mr Pickering is already planning for a Gold medal next year...
