Mr C Allen

Posted on 10th Mar 2022

We are sad to learn of the death of one of our former teachers at Attleborough Academy, Chris Allen.

Chris was one of the original members of staff at the school when it opened as Attleborough High School in 1965. He was originally a boys' PE teacher and rose to be Head of PE. On the day the school was opened in October 1965, a photograph was taken of all the staff in the school car park. Unfortunately, Chris is not in this photograph as he had been accidentally locked in the Art room cupboard along with another teacher, Paul Haigh.

Chris was very proud of the fact he had taught sport to Justin and John Fashanu, who both went on to be professional footballers. Chris later appeared in a television documentary about Justin's career.

Chris also taught Science and moved into pastoral work, becoming a Year Head. He eventually replaced Mr Haigh as Head of the Pastoral System and was an Assistant Head at the school until his retirement in 2002.

As well as being an outstanding teacher, he will be remembered by hundreds of former students for the care and support he gave to everyone. The strong pastoral ethos of Attleborough Academy which is still held in such regard to this day, was created by him and he introduced various initiatives that we still uphold, such as having a Head Boy and Head Girl and introducing the Leavers' Prom, long before other schools in the area.

He was also a wonderful mentor to younger members of staff, always willing to share his experience, opinion and to give advice.

His late wife Christine was a much loved teacher at Attleborough Junior School for many years. The contribution the Allen family made to the community of Attleborough cannot be underestimated.

A consummate professional and a lovely man, Chris will be much missed.

Our thoughts and sincere condolences go out to Chris' daughters and their families.
