University of Essex Sixth Form Sports Trip

Posted on 3rd Feb 2026

Our 6th form sport students enjoyed an inspiring and educational trip to the University of Essex Human Performance Unit. The visit provided a unique opportunity to explore the science behind sport, combining theory with hands-on experience.

During the day, students engaged in a variety of interactive experiments designed to deepen their understanding of sport physiology and biomechanics. Highlights included isolated mid-thigh pulls for strength testing, 3D motion capture sessions, force plate tracking, VO₂ max bike prediction tests, and power assessments. Students also had the rare chance to observe a live VO₂ max test, conducted on one of our own students, offering real insight into cardiovascular fitness and endurance.

The trip not only allowed students to apply scientific principles in a practical setting but also sparked discussions on performance analysis, biomechanics, and the physiological demands of sport. Feedback from participants described the day as both highly educational and thoroughly enjoyable.

Overall, the visit to the University of Essex Human Performance Unit was an outstanding experience, highlighting the exciting intersection of science and sport while inspiring our students to further explore the possibilities within sports performance and exercise science.
