Sutton Hoo and History CEW

We had a fantastic time during History CEW exploring Ancient History this year with a wonderfully enthusiastic and creative cohort of our students. Monday saw us deploying our research skills to discover which areas of Ancient History were of most interest to us before planning how we could present this interest as a diorama museum exhibit. Using this research as a base we visited West Stow on Tuesday to see experimental archaeology in practice. Museum staff were fantastic at explaining what place dioramas play in representing historical time period. Students had an enlightening time exploring the site and walking in the footsteps of the Anglo-Saxon's which they enjoyed immensely; of particular mention was seeing inside their homes and even trying out what their beds and chairs might have been like. Returning to school we began crafting on Wednesday and Thursday to create our dioramas. Creativity flowed unchecked and it was a real challenge to pick our winning dioramas when we had completed them. We ended our week at a site of international importance at Sutton Hoo and got a birds eye view of the burial mounds. We tried our hands at archaeology before seeing the unique artefacts discovered there that changed our understanding of this whole period. A busy, creative and enlightening week to enhance our curriculum.
