Attleborough Academy Students Explore Genomics at the Wellcome Sanger Institute
Posted on 25th Jun 2026Students studying A Level Biology and BTEC Forensic Science recently had the exciting opportunity to visit the world-renowned Wellcome Sanger Institute in Cambridge as part of the Barcoding for Beginners project.
Funded through a Royal Society Partnership Grant, the Barcoding for Beginners programme enables students to experience real scientific research by combining molecular biology, bioinformatics and genomics. The visit provided a valuable opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of genetics while gaining insight into careers in cutting-edge scientific research.
During the day students explored a range of activities designed to support their studies, including an introduction to DNA, genes and genomes, presentations from genomics researchers and practical classroom-based investigations. They also visited the Open Lab and had the unique opportunity to see one of the world's largest DNA sequencing facilities in action.
The experience directly complemented key topics studied in both A Level Biology and BTEC Forensic Science, particularly those relating to DNA, genetics and genetic engineering. Students were able to see how the concepts they learn in the classroom are applied in real-world research environments and gain a greater appreciation of the impact of genomics on modern science and medicine.
Mr Seymour, A-Level Biology Teacher, said:
"Experiences such as this help bring science to life. Our students were able to engage with leading researchers, explore state-of-the-art facilities and develop a deeper understanding of the exciting opportunities available within the field of genomics."
The Academy is grateful to the Wellcome Sanger Institute for hosting the visit and providing students with such an inspiring and educational experience. Opportunities like this continue to support Attleborough Academy's commitment to raising aspirations and encouraging students to pursue their interests in STEM subjects.
