Year 11 National Archives Trip

Posted on 30th Nov 2023

Year 11 History students had an enlightening and enlivening trip to the National Archives in November. The students spent two hours in one of two intensive workshops, being introduced to the National Archives and having access to the documents held there.

In one workshop, we pitted our skills against 16th Century handwriting with many relishing the challenge of trying to decipher it. The climax of the day certainly came when we were shown the letter sent from Elizabeth I to her sister Mary I begging for her life in the Tower of London, valued at £20 million pounds!, which our students found fascinating. They described the session as excellent and relished the chance to see historians at work and some would now love this as a career.

In the second session our students had the opportunity to explore the lives of soldiers in World War One and were delighted with the story of Wilfred Owen and to see his service record. After their session, their leader said our students were, "the best school she had ever had the opportunity to deliver the World War One session to."

A thoroughly enjoyable trip; made more so by our wonderful students.
